Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has cancelled a death warrant for William Lee Thompson, 74, who was convicted of murder in Miami-Dade County. It is the first time DeSantis has cancelled an execution. A second execution was still set to go ahead Tuesday.
The move came days after a problematic lethal injection involving Christa Pike brought new questions over Florida's capital punishment procedures. The governor provided no statement for cancelling the order for Thompson specifically.
