Data Science Grants FAQ
Research Goes Red Recruitment
How does the Project Baseline platform support recruitment today?
The Project Baseline platform uses digital advertising across multiple channels to reach individuals who may be interested in participating in Research Goes Red/Project Baseline. Candidates can learn more about Research Goes Red and open studies by visiting www.projectbaseline.com. All enrollment and consenting occurs online.
Do I have to do online recruiting?
No. Recruiting initiatives can occur in person, online, through a physician or other trusted advisor, or any way you can imagine. In order to complete enrollment, participants must create an online profile and sign an electronic consent form via Project Baseline.
May I get data from the Project Baseline platform to perform my own analysis of recruiting trends?
Individual-level data is not available for actions taken prior to signing informed consent. Aggregate data may be available (e.g., how many participants took a certain action in a recruiting process). Once a participant has completed an online consent form, de-identified data about her actions within the Baseline platform are available for analysis.
Engagement
What surveys may be used in the Baseline platform?
The Baseline platform can support a variety of surveys. Applicants should propose surveys that best align with their research hypotheses.
How else may I utilize the Baseline platform, other than using surveys?
The platform has broad capabilities to deliver content. Some previous uses have been informational communications (lay and scientific), invitations to events, individual and aggregate research results, and newsletters.
How am I able to test my engagement approaches using the Baseline platform?
The platform can support providing targeted content to users in order to test the effectiveness of the content, delivery timing, delivery mechanism, etc.
Can I use AHA-approved, educational materials for engagement?
Yes.
What data am I able to receive from the Baseline platform?
Once a participant has completed a consent form to join Research Goes Red, de-identified, aggregated data about their actions and results of any surveys they complete within the Baseline platform are available for analysis.
General FAQ
Who do we fund?
We have funded researchers who have just started out and are working on their first project. And we’ve funded researchers who have had more than 20 projects previously funded - across pre-doctoral as well as post-doctoral applicants.
You must meet the requirements of the individual RFA to be considered for Data Science grant funding.
What are the funding areas of AHA Data Science?
We highly value cross-disciplinary research across many fields where the proposals are focused on advancing knowledge, clinical care, or outcomes for people, and are anchored in heart and brain health. We have funded researchers in bioinformatics, clinical research, data science, epidemiology, genetics, nephrology, biostatistics, machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence and the development of novel methodology.
I'm a new investigator, what key elements do I need to know about before applying for a research grant?
Here are a few pointers to help you along the way:
- Be sure to include timelines and milestones in your proposal.
- Your cited literature is a separate document.
- All grants are received and administered through ProposalCentral.
Where do I apply for the grant?
Go to ProposalCentral at https://proposalcentral.com/.
Are the grants available to international applicants?
It depends on the grant opportunity. Some of our grants are available internationally as long as your institution meets the Foreign Equivalency Determinants for a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Please contact [email protected] for more information.
May I apply for more than one grant at a time?
Absolutely! Each proposal must be unique so that it can stand on its own.
Do I have to be a member of the AHA in order to apply?
Yes, each applicant must be an AHA Professional Member. Join or renew when preparing an application in ProposalCentral, online, or by phone at 301-223-2307 or 800-787-8984. Membership processing takes 3-5 days. Do not wait until the application deadline to renew or join.
Is an appendix allowable?
No.
May I get a carry-over of funds from one year to the next?
Yes. You will need to provide a rationale for any carry forward of $10,000 or more.
May I have more than one principal investigator for my award?
There is no limit. However, the number of principal investigators should be reasonable given the budget and scope of the project.
For applications that require a data access approval letter, is this required if the PI is using his or her own data?
No, it is not. Please make sure you make ownership of the data clear in your application.
May I transfer my award to another institution?
It is possible depending on the RFA and the length of time you have left on the award. The transfer process is a time-intensive process which requires your current institutions to provide financial reports so that the payments are split correctly between institutions.
How can I check the status of my grant application?
You will receive an automatic email from ProposalCentral when the status of your application changes.
Who will review my Institute grant application?
Each application is reviewed by a peer review committee that includes experts across many fields.
How will I be notified once the Peer Review Committee makes a decision?
You will receive an email from ProposalCentral.
